could insurance quotes be the reason I was declined a card?

Options
Hi all,

Okay so a check with experians free trial said i had a good credit rating, which is as I was expecting... the only thing I could find (and the person on the phone mentioned this to me when I phoned up to cancel the free trial) - I had a very large amount of car insurance quotes under my name. This is because I had used moneysupermarket, and compare the market etc to try and find the cheapest car insurance available.

The experian person on the phone originally said I had a excessive amount of "credit card" applications.. at which point after I corrected him, he saw this and agreed it was insurance quotes.. He then went onto say that using sites such as moneySupermarket can hurt my credit rating due to this, and he suggested instead I use the experian "lower your bills" service...

So anyway I was just wondering to what extent what was said here is true? Could this be the reason I was declined a card? I got one with the second company I tried which was a visa card, not mastercard so it isn't urgent that I know this, but im just curious?

Insurance searches, being as they're only for ID purposes, are classed as 'unrecorded enquiries', ie they're not seen by anyone else but yourself and the CRA.

I'm surprised (or maybe I'm not!) that the Experian [STRIKE]call centre operative[/STRIKE] salesperson didn't know/wasn't trained correctly.

Thanks, I thought this might be the case... Just someone trying to sell their services by using scare tactics right? :)

    Good lord.

That's absolutely shocking advice given by someone clearly happy to lie to promote Experian's own service and commit slander against Moneysupermarket - absolute tosh that he's told you and is a clear sign of problems within Experian.

I would invite James Jones to comment on what measures he will be implementing in the call centre to ensure that more customers aren't lied to in this way by unscrupulous sales advisers arbitrarily pushing "Lower my bills" based on false information...?

  • No idea who James Jones is but I never considered the idea of slander lol.

Even a CRA's technical director and our relationship manager couldnt confirm the above to us when we implemented credit scoring as a rating factor (not just an ID check) but only said it "shouldnt" impact
