Cat flap in a double glazed window

Hi,

I am picking up my new kitten next week :j and after neutering and injections, i'll consider letting him out. I'm a ground floor flat with the only entrance leading to a communal stairway. I was thinking of getting a cat flap fitted in one of the windows instead. Does anyone know how much this would cost and could recommend someone to do it? I live in Edinburgh.

Thanks,

Susan

  • Is it a whole window or is it one with multiple panes that you could put it in one of those?

TBH I've thought about it in the past but have always decided against as you lose the benefits of the double glazing and can get a howling draft through

I have this done, it was £64.99 for the catflap, £9.99 for the mounting thingy & about £125 to the glazier. He made a new window pane with the catflap in it. Just google, alot of glaziers do catflaps in glass. I can't recommend anyone as i'm miles away but no draughts or anything it's brilliant

    Thanks,

Hmm it's just one pane - but it actually sounds too expensive. I might just let him come and go via the window. A friend of mine has trained her two to come in at a certain time of night!

Bear in mind mine's a microchip catflap so of course normal ones will be much cheaper lol

Well worth it, mine couldn't jump through the window so had a ramp but kept asking to go out then in, out etc lol

We are planning to do this in a door pane for the conservatory and the cheapest quote we got was £200 + cost of cat flap. This is a whole door pane though.
Before we moved into our house we had Ollie in a ground floor flat with the exact same dilema, it was rented though so we couldnt put a catflap in. We taught Ollie to jump in and out of the window.

You start from the outside and you push them up the wall into the window, kind of let them walk up nice and slowly and pull themselves into the window and then praise and reward when they get to the windowsill ... it only takes a few times and before long he will be jumping in and out no problem.

Why not replace the window with a PVC board with a catflat installed? Keep the pane of glass safe somewhere to be put back in when you move out... much cheaper!

Hi, Did you decide on a solution to your problem. I am also in the same situation and I'm from Edinburgh. If you did find a glazier do you have a recommendation.

My boyfriend thinks if we go for the option of just letting the cat in and out when we are around then the cat will feel too shut in when we are not around.

I Lived in a second floor flat with cat, he just used to come and go when we was around, he'd always come in at night and as people come and go through the main door he'd come and go and wait by our front door in the hall if we wasn't home. If we lived on the bottom floor I would of just used a window to let him in or out. I live in a house now with 4 cats and I still don't have a cat flap. The cats come in for breakfast and tea. In the day the come through the window if its open or if I'm out they come running when they hear my car pull up.
