Earth Rod/Spike

New water pipes being laid, and we need to install earth rod/spike. Does anyone have rough idea of cost to have work carried out by qualified spark? Rough estimate?

Who has told you this ?

You only need an earth rod with overhead power supplies, new water pipes being laid wont affect the earthing.

Just because you have over head power lines doesn't mean you need to have TT system. It could be worth phoning you supplier and asking to speak to the metering department and see if you can have a PME installed which would be a lot cheaper than having earth rods installed for your earthing system.

Not true, I am on a overhead connection and have PME. Also, on the side of my house is a wayleaved DNO PME box supplying one of the many earths. In less built up areas overhead connections may mean TT is the only option, completely depends on the network, only the DNO will be able to tell you if its available and allowed to be used.

dil1976, why do you want a earth rod installing? If you don't have a earth rod at the moment, then hopefully you already have TNS or TNCS - ie. the earth is provided by the network. If you don't have a rod, or an earth supplied by the network you have problem that needs solving ASAP regardless of plastic pipes. You should call your DNO, and ask if the an earth is available, and then get a local electrician to install it. A picture of around your meter and main fuse would help.

sorry that is completely wrong advice to give as years ago the earth connection "sometimes" relied on the lead / metal water pipe

The electrical wiring in your premises should include an automatic means of disconnecting faulty wiring or appliances. To achieve this your premises will have an earth connection.

In some premises the local supplier provides this earth connection otherwise the owner must provide their own. e'g via an earth rod

If the owner provides their own then in a small number of cases the effectiveness of the earth connection may be reduced by replacing the lead / copper water pipe with a plastic one.

Therefore if you are replacing the lead / copper water pipe into your premises, you should check that your earth connection is satisfactory.

so to answer the op . yes you may need a new rod / connection

    About £50 around here

without knowing all the info reguarding your earthing system

    can't answer you correctly sorry

and if you don't have one already then it's likely your fuse board will require upgrading too - this will be slightly more than £50...
