Entitled to anything???

Hi there,

Me and my girlfriend are hoping to rent a property in a few months time. I was just wondering if anybody knows if we will be entitled to claim a reduced rent or a reduction in council tax, due to our income.

Myself (27) - annual salary is less than £10,000 per annum
Girlfriend (28) - annual salary is £17,000 per annum (She has travel costs of £40 per week, commuting)

We have never claimed anything in our lives and have no dependants.

I would be grateful for any information on this matter,
Many thanks.

I'm afraid that it looks as if you would not be entitled to anything based on your joint income.

Eligibility for benefits do not take into account any of your expenditure. They are interested in your joint income and savings/capital.

You can double check your eligibility on www.turn2us.org.uk

If you are finding it difficult to see how you are going to manage on your income then you might like to read the articles/forums on this site for some excellent ideas on how to reduce your expenditure/increase your income.

    Good luck!

  • That's a healthy combined income for two of you without any children. I wish you did get tax breaks for commuting costs - mine are just under £300 a month!! :rotfl: I'd take the advice of the first poster and go through all your monthly expenses, cut down wherever possible and see what is left for rent. Then look for properties on that budget. Good luck!

£27,000 between you and no kids, why on earth are you enquiring about benefits etc!!!! I am a public sector worker with a non-working wife and two teenagers, I have travel costs, mortgage etc etc. You need to look at what you are spending and live within your means, dont want to sound rude but you sound like another member of the modern benefit culture... if you cant survive on what you get you could maybe look at doing more hours or a second job.......

That's way more than i earn to support me and my OH who is disabled and doesn't work. Unfortunately it's a case of do without what you can't afford.

Please seriously look at your spending as starting out together should be a great experience and if you spend within what you have you'll start off life together on a solid foundation.

I wish you lots of luck
