I have a problem with AOL email and Outlook which I hope someone can help with.
I have an AOL email address, set up in May, which is no longer working with outlook. AOL web mail works fine and outlook will receive emails but any email sent through outlook via this account gets rejected with a message:
Sender address rejected: not owned by user
AOL online help can't fix the problem, anyone got any ideas?

Are you logged in and running under AOL broadband whatever when doing this or are you now using another ISP.
Reason being:
Some systems are set up to refuse to send mail sent via clients such as outlook through their servers if you are logged in via another ISP and then using that other ISP to send your AOL (in this example) mail via them.
So in this example in effect using the other ISP to act as a relay email server to AOL's server.
They don't like this sort of thing.
(Webmail not affected by this)
My own ISP is happy about this sort of thing but won't allow you to connect to your webspace to FTP stuff in/out unless you are operating/connected via the ISP's own broadband service at the time.

It works for me, using their smtp, authenticated as below and using the correct port.
Using these settings:
smtp.aol.com
Checked: "My server requires authentication"
"Use same settings as my incoming mail server"
use the full address:
screenname@aol.com
screen.name@aol.com
port 465
Checked: "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)"

Thanks for the replies.
I am logging into AOL using another ISP which I know works because it works with an AOL email address I have had for over 10 years.
A couple of new addresses set up in April which I am using for specific projects have had this problem for around a month. The problem occurs when they are set up with the recommended settings from AOL and from this thread.0 -
You will probably need to set Outlook up to send via AOL's pop3 server. And many ISPs now block port 25 to stop you using alternative servers - usually a change to port 467 or similar will allow you to send.0

Old thread, but I figured out the answer (in my case anyway) and it might help someone:
I used the Thunderbird email client to automatically set up the AOL email account, and it only puts in the username (the part before the @) as the user to log onto the SMTP server with. This probably works if your ISP is actually AOL (as the @aol.com part is then implied) - but it not you have to put in the full email address.
So instead of user = xxx, put user = xxx@aol.com.
(I realise the answer is already kinda in the thread, but the OP seems to have missed it)0
