Broadband connection dropping when landline rings

This is a problem that seemed to appear a few weeks ago when the extension for the land line was changed. It isn't a huge issue unless I'm doing my course at home which is why I've only thought to ask about it now.

Someone uses the landline to either call out or a calls comes in and the internet goes down and any website redirects to this...

Not Connected...

Your DSL connection is down.

Verify if your SpeedTouch is correctly connected to your DSL line. For more information consult your documentation.

Please close this window and try again.

It reconnects quite soon after in most cases unless the call is slightly longer it then requires the router to be switched off and on.

What is the problem likely to be and is it easy to rectify?

Usually most commonaly caused because of microfilter issues. Just check that your telephone handsets are plugged into the BT socket on the microfilter. If it is and still a problem try a different filter.

If it's a plug in extension, make sure the microfilter is plugged into the phone socket before the extension.if it's hardwired, check the polarity is correct in the wiring (blue white to 3 on both, white blue to 5) & disconnect the bell wire (orange-5)
Make sure you have a master socket there if it's hardwired.

This doesn't sound right. If it's a plugged in extension it should go directly into the wall socket (or via a splitter if there isn't a piggy-back socket on the plug and the socket is also to be used for a phone)

A microfilter needs to be plugged into any socket that is being used for a modem/router, phone, fax etc.

It is right...I've been doing this since the late 90's..both as a service engineer & also help desks.

If it is a straight phone extension with no broadband on the line & the router connected into the master socket, then it should be as I described,

If the broadband & phone are on the end of the extension, then the microfilter needs to be connected at the extension end & not the master socket as you described.

You are correct if it is a straight phone extension with the router connected into the master socket, but your solution is wrong if the customer wants to plug the router into the extension.

Er..I believe that's what I said in the post above...

    sorry,I missed out the comma.

Sorry, I forgot to italicise the word if

    This is also correct.

The router may be plugged into ANY socket as they all have microfilters. Whilst the diagram shows hard-wired extension wiring the same layout can be used with a plug-in extension that has a piggypack socket, or an extension plugged in via a splitter.

Whilst it needs additional microfilters it removes much of the potential for customer error if (for example) they wanted to move the router to one of the extensions, where they could end up with one or more sockets without filters or two microfilters in series - neither of which is correct.

Furthermore the red bit doesn't mention that if the router was moved to an extension, the other extension would also need a microfilter.

Think I have sorted it, stepdad had plugged the phone extension cable to the socket then the filter into that I swapped it round and just called my landline from my mobile and the connection didn't drop but I guess time will tell x
