Unauthorised charge on my account

Options
This morning I checked my Halifax credit card account to see if a payment I made to the account last week had made it across. This is a card I have with me in my purse at all times but very rarely use (approx 2 transactions a month) and always clear in full. Last month I used it to buy some coffee from Amazon.com (£10) and 3 tickets from See Tickets to see Kelly Clarkson, which I paid off last week when the friends coming with me gave me their share. That was the payment I was checking had gone through, and the tickets (purchased on 18th May) were the last purchases I made on that card.

Those payments have gone through, but there is now a charge for £369 from Tesco Direct on June 18th. I haven't used this card since I bought those tickets, I haven't used it at Tesco ever, and I've logged into my Tesco Direct account to make sure nobody has logged into that and ordered something (there aren't even any payment cards added to my account and I don't think I've actually ever ordered from them, just checked prices).

I called Halifax and put the charge in dispute, the guy I spoke to was very helpful and friendly but this was obviously not the kind of thing he usually deals with. He told me the dispute dept will call me within 10 working days and that I should ring Tesco and see what I can find out - the dispute people will ask me what Tesco said and if I could find out a delivery address for the item, etc.

So I called Tesco and the guy there said he couldn't help. I don't have an order number and there's no order information on the system with my postcode so there's nothing he can do - he can't search on my name, the credit card details, or any other information that I could give him. I argued for about five minutes and asked to speak to somebody higher up, he put me on hold and came back and repeated the same information, telling me to call the credit card company. Which obviously I told him I had done, and he just kept telling me he couldn't do anything (but in a very arsey manner, might I add).

Is there anything further I can do or should I just wait for the dispute dept to get back to me now and tell them Tesco wouldn't give me any info? I don't want to end up out of pocket because there was further action I should have taken.

The man from Halifax cancelled my card and is sending out a new one with a completely different number so that part is taken care of.

I wouldn't worry about it. It's Halifax's money and their problem.

I wouldn't have wasted my time (and presumably money) calling Tesco.

Forget the dispute department, I would be straight on the phone to the fraud department ASAP.

From OP looks as though you have repaid any transactions you were responsible for, so CC need to block the account, cancel dd and get new account details out to you before any other transactions take place...

Thanks - SnowTiger, called Tesco on a freephone number so no charge, and at least if Halifax ask me I've done what they requested!

StuC75 - couldn't find a number for the fraud department and the guy I spoke to on the customer services line originally said he was going to transfer me to the fraud dept, put me on hold, and then came back on the line to say since it was just one transaction he'd been told to deal with it by putting the charge into dispute. We did cancel the card/block the account and I don't have a DD set up - I always repay in full but I always check the bill and pay it manually because when I use this card it's often for things like ticket purchases where I pay it off as soon as friends have given me money for theirs.

New card is on it's way to me so hopefully that should be that now - just sometimes don't trust what I'm told on the phone so glad to hear pretty much what I expected from responses here, thanks!
  • You have done all you need to do ! You have told the card issuer that you did not carry out the transaction - it is HIS problem, not yours.
It was his money that was spent, you owe nothing.
  • Do not worry. The dispute team will raise an investigation and ask the company to prove why they have billed you. They may credit it back straight away or just freeze the amount wilst they look into it. If it comes back with other peoples details then the fraud team will certainly deal with it. I would probably try and speak to the disputes team though try and get it lodged quicker.
