Your deposit is your money. Your landlord should protect your deposit in one of the schemes within 30 days of the start of your tenancy. If not, you could be due compensation of 1-3 times the value of the deposit.

The legislation regarding deposit protection has changed recently. Be aware however that there has been discussion in another place that claiming the 1-3xdeposit compo may be tricky & expensive,.. Hopefully some test cases will establish what reality is..

AFAIK the tool only applies to England & Wales. Scottish deposit protection starts in July 2012.
