Motor Insurance Cancellation help

Hi,

I have a bike insurance policy that ends on 17th of July and I was called yesterday to ask if I wanted to renew. I said I would providing I dont find anything cheaper so they said the DD would just continue to run.

I did a price comparison and found a £50 cheaper policy so rang to say I didnt want to go ahead with the renewal (bear in mind it is almost a month away) and I am told it has been renewed and that I will have to pay £50 to cancel it.

Its ridiculous-and was on the phone forever but they would not budge. Surely if I just cancel the DD and dont pay anything towards the new policy they will cancel it in anycase??

If your policy doesn't end till the middle of July, then send them a recorded delivery letter saying you want it to lapse as from then, and ask them to confirm your instructions back to you.

If you have paid for it in full, then cancel your dd.

No. That just cancels the method of payment but not the contract. You would just build up a debt which can then be recorded as a default on your credit file.

You need to tell them that you do not wish the policy to be renewed. Do not say cancel as that means something else. If they argue that you agreed to renew and you say you didnt then you complain. They will listen to the call and decide the outcome from there.

I agree cancelling the policy and telling them to go and whistle etc is not a good idea.

The debt will still be active. Any no claims wont be released as its already in use. And then they will cancel the policy which you probably didnt declare to the new insurance company so thats round 2 of future problems.
