Dental Hospital plans and cancellation

There was not a thread to put this under and just wondered what people thought on this.
I had been waiting months to have a GA sedation at the hospital for my wisdom tooth removal which is impacted under gum, my dentist referred me for this a few months ago, since its under gum and painful and needs an oral surgeon.
I managed to get in this week on a cancellation which suited me greatly as my husband also has week off work, and I was told I need person with me afterwards for 24hrs.
I woke up this morning with a severe throat infection and could hardly talk. The Operation was to be for tomorrow morning.
I then rang up hospital to inform them and my voice went half way through and husband had to take the rest of the call. Appointments person said yes she will have to unfortunately wait longer now and await another appointment. I do generally feel quite unwell to. The form I received stated if you become unwell please re arrange your surgery date.
Question: Did I do the right thing by telling them I was sick?
Some said I should have gone and had it done and said I wasn't that bad, but my voice had nearly gone and you could hear how bad it is. Plus my throat is as dry as a bone as well. My Doctor said I have a severe throat infection and gave me antibiotics.
thanks in advance.
