Do you still have to wash down walls these days before
painting on emulsion ?
I'm hoping it's ok just to get cracking with the painting ?

Depends how dirty they are or how long it's been since they were last decorated. Or if it's a kitchen, or if you smoke in the house.
If in doubt then wash them, it'll give you a nicer finish too. You know what they always say about painting 70% preparation 30% appliction (or something along those lines

You mentioned 'if you smoke'. If I wash down the white gloss paintwork and it still doesn't come up that white, I'll have to undercoat it again I suppose

use sugar soap to wash down walls , you will be supprised how dirty clean walls are
solvent based paints for woodwrk do yellow , use water based ones , they don't0
