I fitted a Vaillant 937 storage combi in the loft even though I had doubts it would cope.

HTF did you get that beast up into the loft!!!

I am one of the few engineers who seems to like the challenges the Range Powermax presents. I have the scars to prove it! They were a great concept but poorly exercised. They are very efficient - even compared to modern condensing boilers - and have phenominal recovery times. It's a pity they had so many issues.
Most Powermax's have had it although spares are readily available. I will happily service them but always warn my customers of the limited life they have left. All of them are on borrowed time.
I removed one in a house that had 25+ litres per minute of mains water coming into the property. The customer want his cupboard back but didn't want to lose any performance from his hot water. Tall order. I fitted a Vaillant 937 storage combi in the loft even though I had doubts it would cope. The smile on mine and the customers face said it all. A great boiler with staggering performance.

We conducted a Powermax autopsy on our last one...the turbulators were in a sorry state for starters. The customer had already dropped a £££s on repairs over the last year and just had enough. A mate's 3 year old Powermax is having issues...he's with a Heateam service plan as it is a bit too far for the OH to travel in a day.;)

Guess you'll be dealingwith lots of flues in voids too over the next few months before the change in regs on 1 January.

Hehe. Good job it comes in 2 bits. Even so I did wonder. I was very worried whether the breeze blocks would take the weight. Scarey.
  • Just to put the Powermax in perspective the output to hot water is equivalent to 56KW ( 18litres / min @ 45C rise ) albeit only for a bath and a half worth at a time.
Also as the central heating was fed from the store it could supply very low ( from zero upwards ) continuous outputs without constant cycling as well as intermittent high output giving in effect a very wide modulation despite only being a fixed 15KW ( output ) burner.
Given the above finding a straight replacement may not be that easy for anyone using it fully.

So what would be a suitable replacement installation?

    Cheers

  • Just had small leak repaired on 10 year old Powermax 155x. Plumber said there are not many serviceable parts on this boiler and suggested it was a good system. Why is it suggested in one thread that this type of boiler is dangerous? What parts are no longer available?

I have just had my powermax serviced and the man that did so said he carried all parts that in his experience, could be needed (it didn't need any). He didn't say where he got them from but had them.

We had BG out to service for the start of a cover plan and when service engineer got here said that they, as a company do not service this type of boiler and away he went again. Why they cant ask/tell you that when you phone up and request it i have no idea, would save everyone a lot of time.

Is the boiler you are all discussing a different beast to the boiler I have in my flat ( Potterton Powermax HE85 )

The previous owner had used BG to service it for last few years.

Had an engineer round recently, as Potterton were doing a free replacement of aluminium condensate thingy, but it turned out that mine had already been upgraded with a composite version.

Yes, the Powermax 155 is different from the Powermax HE (I also have the Powermax HE).
