Travelling to Greece in August

Hi Guys,
Just wondered if anyone had any advice or tips for travel money? We are going to Kalymnos in August, which is a very small island, so not sure if a pre payment card or cash would be better? Plus has anyone been over to Greece, what are the prices like?
Thank you

Hi I'm bumping this post as we're going to Makry Gialos in south east Crete and would like to ask the same question. We already have a pre load card which I have started loading but is this the best option? I'm reluctant to take everything in cash for obvious reasons.

    Thanks that was really useful.

If anyone else can offer some more helpful and practical advice I'd be very grateful. Thanks

I don't know if this is helpful at all, as it'll be my first trip abroad in years, but I am also going to Greece in August (or in 50 days, lol)

I am taking 200 euros with me, £500 cash and the rest will be probably still in my UK bank account and will withdraw cash as needed from the machines. I am still considering getting a prepay card thing, but am still umming and aahing at that, so any feedback you get would be great.

Check out the Trip Advisor forums (just search resort name) for where local prices, people on there are really helpful.

Hope you have a fab holiday!

the only caution I have about pre-pay cards is check if you're going to one of the quieter resorts that there is a cash point. A friend of mine loaded up a fairfx card a couple of years ago and took that, as well as his cash, to a really quiet island. He had to get a taxi with his last 10 euro as there wasn't a cash machine in the town where they were..... it was a funny story when he told it...:)

    Hi there,

We went to Corfu a few weeks ago. Prices don't seem to have gone up for the last few years, we found eating out especially very good value, and spent less than we expected - especially since we got more Euros this year for our pounds.

Nothing has changed much in the islands as far as I can tell. We changed our (old) travellers cheques with no problem even though travel agents and banks here in England seem to think we wouldn't be able to.

We keep taking cards "for contingency" but have never actually used them! There aren't a lot of cash machines in the smaller resorts/islands, so I personally wouldn't rely too heavily on cards, in case the only local machine is out of order!

We went to Makrigialos a few years ago with Kosmar before they went bust - fabulous place, hope the lovely people there are still managing to make a living now there are no package tours to help out. We had an apartment right on the beach and went to sleep to the sound of the waves.

Kalymnos is one of the places I intend to get to one day!

Have a great holiday both of you Chrissieaj and johnno.

Great post, just what i am looking for!

So Greece are def staying in the Euro. What other problems could i come across?

Crete in 13 days time, trying to decide if I should take £500 worth of Euros in small notes or some in euro some in GBP or leave some in bank account?

Am clueless! Would usually take load of euros and bank card for top up.

Cant wait now but a little unsure about what sort of problems might possible happen?

I doubt you will see any problems. You will get more Euros for your £ & the prices are pretty good. All the islands are just concertrating on the tourists & you will have a great time.

Going back to Kassiopi (Corfu) in August. Don't often go back to the same place but it was brilliant last year and as we can only do a week decided to go somewhere familiar to save time. Last year over two weeks I was able to use my CaxtonFX in many shops, even small ones had a card terminal. Took cash out the local cash machines no problem, they were usually working fine. I was able to recharge or balance check the Caxton card on my mobile with a simple SMS messages. Never any issues and will be doing the same this year, 250 euro's and the Caxton.
