I only have the one hard drive at the moment and although it is hosting both op systems, they are on separate partitions so should not interfere with each other. In any case, when I tried booting off the windows 7 installation dvd this failed in ahci mode as well so I am doubting the fault lies with having two op systems connected to the motherboard as the dvd drive was the sole drive connected to it.

thor my friend forget your toys for the moment, just do as suggested and get your MOBO / BIOS / SSD to work with all the other stuff pulled off - its just cable M8 - you pull em off and plug em in later - no biggie.


REM: a clean install is not part of any dual anything ! get the SSD working correctly on AHCi in Win7 and the group will show you how to get the other O/S's multi-booting later.

Is there a massive difference? From what I have read when set to ahci an ssd drive takes typically a 10 or 11 seconds to boot up - my ssd set to ide takes about 15 seconds so not a big hit there and much quicker than a slow sata drive.

It has taken me a week to install all my old applications back on to XP and all the new apps onto Win 7 and I can't face doing it all over again so I have decided I am going to stay with IDE and it's slower speeds. No doubt AHCI is quicker but I don't think it is that much quicker plus I have no need to do any hot swapping. Of course if my system goes haywire necessitating a new install then I will be revisiting this thread. Thanks for sticking with me.
