When should searches be initiated?

My solicitor received my search fees two weeks ago but hasn't initiated the searches yet.
Does anyone know when the searches are normally initiated. I'm wodnering whether they're normally done straight away or whether they're delayed until things like the survey has been completed/mortgage offer received.

Why commit good money to searches when you may not end up buying this property at all or may not be able to if you don't have your mortgage-offer yet? Sounds like the conveyancer may be acting in your best interests0

Ok, so the answer is that they wait until the mortgage offer has been received first. That makes sense.
I received my mortgage offer a week ago so hopefully they'll be applying for the searches soon.0
