Windows Live Essentials Update

I run my email accounts through Windows Live Mail, and the last time I was prompted to do a Windows Live Essentials update, it wiped all of my contacts, including the contacts folder, and I had to carry out a system restore to a date prior to the update, which fortunaetly resolved the problem. However, when I tried clicking on Windows Live Mail today, it won't even open and a box appears and tells me to click to install the latest update for Windows Live Essentials. I only use the Windows Live Mail, haven't a clue what the Essentials bit is. I don't want to have to remove and reinstall it all as it took me hours to install it in the first place as I'm not at all technical, and I don't want to have to import everything all over again.
Does anyone know if there's anything else I can do, please?

You could make a backup?
Alternatively:- Install Thunderbird or similar
- Import everything from WLM
- Make sure you got everything
- Uninstall WLM
- Restart computer
- Install update(s)
- Create new identity using IMAP instead of POP.

Thanks for your reply, sorry, but I don't know what IMAP & POP are (they sound like some sort of 70's bands!). I'm getting to the point where I think I'll just stop using the email for which I have to use WLM and just use the one where I can access by just going online instead, it has to be easier! I'm technically challenged I'm afraid!0

I don't know what IMAP & POP are
They're just methods of accessing email accounts. POP downloads a copy and (usually) deletes the original whereas IMAP simply mirrors what's on the mail server.
The latter is similar to webmail in one respect: you don't need to back up your messages. Of course, if you use webmail you can transfer all your contacts too...0
