Just download the bootable live CD of GParted -- I presume it will detect external hard drives connected via USB...

Easeus Partition Master (running as an app in Windows) will format an external USB disk to EXT3.

Not being a BT customer could you explain what BT Overnight is?
Obviously you are downloading to a cache, so it is probably tv or films - but I thought BT provides an on demand service.

(I also have a Windows XP VM that I use to control a scanner and some other gadgets that don't have Windows 7 drivers.)
