Help Please, I am waiting for my garage to come back to me as to whether my car is an insurance write off or repairable. Can anybody advise me where insurance companies get their prices from when valuing my car for write off purposes, I have heard of Glass Guide , is this right ?
All help appreciated,
Many Thanks

Hi - garages and insurance companies have access to Glass's and also CAP Guide which are not available to the public but Parkers Guide available at your newsagents is broadly similar and will give you some idea of write off values.
Best of luck0 -

Insurance companies will offer you the least amount they think they can get away with.A friend of mine was quoted a derisory price for his write off. When pushed.they admitted they had used Exchange and Mart as their arbiter of market price! As if.
Should you be keen on retaining your car,you can elect to keep your car and get it
repaired yourself. If you are good at it,or you have friends or relatives in the business
it can be a better option.0 -
Hi thank you all. The engineer from the insurance company phoned me friday afternoon contacted me friday afternoon and said that it was a write off, he has valued it at 4 grand, repairs to cost 3970. PArkers guide and Autotrader advise that the rate from a franchised dealer is 4030 and from a non franchised dealer is 3845 so I cannot believe my luck. Luckily for me I am in a job where all my calls are recorded so I have this as evidence of wht he told me if they decide to dispute, nice!!!!Up the Rams !!0

So in those circumstances, it depends if you want the car! It might be worth taking the £4k, buying the salvage back from them for a nominal amount, then getting it repaired somewhere cheaper - if you think you can find such a repair place.
The resale value will be damaged though, as the fact it was written off will be logged with DVLA.0 -
That sounds good. For other people reading, you're not obliged to accept the first offer. I was offered £600; wrote in with a wealth of detail; second offer £850.0

My motor is an ex stolen recovered write off and the log book states that the registration cannot be transfered. I can put a personalised plate on but when it comes off the original reg is reserved to go back on.
Also if you do a HPI type check it'll come back as an insurance write off.0 -
If you look at ads from salvage yards, some specify that they are not registered as
write offs-perhaps that was what peter bought?I don't know what the criteria is for
registering a write off,or not.
Vaguely remember a friend of mine buying a write off,and doing it up.When he made
an insurance claim for a subsequent accident, the insurer was reluctant to,or didn't, pay out.
Seems a bit strong,as they were quite happy to accept the premiums.0 -
when my last motor was written off i asked about what happens and was told that the insurance companies 'keep a record'0
