Mobile usage - Canada

Shortly be travelling to Vancouver, Edmonton and Banff.

Currently using Vodafone PayAsYouGo with Freedom pack and passport etc.in the UK. I used my phone recently in France and was under the impression that using my phone would be no different in charges as in UK. Although calling a UK landline, I got charged. I thought the freedom pack and passport package could be used as in the UK (no charge and airtime taken from my £10 Freedom pack).

So what would be the best method in using my Moby in Canada for texting to and fro UK. Using my phone as in France or get a Canadian sim card to text to UK, also my phone has no WiFi.
