I actually want to buy one particular car from a dealer "sold as seen". It was a trade-in and will get punted to auction.

Without a vat number and being in the motor trade, I can't buy it due to soga kicking in and the dealer, quite rightly, doesn't want to be liable if it goes "pop".

Only option is to buy it at auction, and pay the £200 plus buyers fees there.

Any way round this?

There are plenty of traders who will sell you a car and get you to sign your rights away by you categorically stating you are in the trade. (You don't need, or in fact get, a VAT number day one of trading for example).
I guarantee however, if you are not in, or connected with, the trade, you will be driving away the circus car.

Noticed some dealers selling trade-ins on ebay as spares or repairs as if this by passes the SOGA.
No idea if it does or not, might be worth looking into.

I know the car, I know the history of the vehicle, and I know the owner. (everyone knows everyone around here). Its basically one particular vehicle I never knew was being traded in, less I would have bought it off the owner.

I've updated the original post to avoid confusion.

(my last car, bought "sold as seen" has lasted 10 years. Things were easier then, I just signed a piece of paper!)

Get the dealer to sell it to you as unroadworthy/scrap

None runner, spares or repair. I bought my last one from a dealer that way. It drove away perfectly, and has ran fine ever since.

It's ok if it is true though, and not applied to a car sold otherwise as a good runner.

have you actually spoken to dealer?
if yes and he refuses to sell you it then go to auction remove fuse 32 so the fuel pump wont work and when they push it through you will be the only bidder and you will nick it

simple

to heck with the dealer.............

Sorted. Dealer was happy with the idea. Still don't how how that gets round soga, but there you go.
