Insurance for Rental Car

Hello Moneysavers,

I am about to hire a rental car, as I do frequently, and I am not sure the insurance deals offered by the rental companies are the best I can hope for. Are there alternatives? Can I buy insurance for the (limited periods) I need a rental car?

You can buy a short term policy or add it to your existing policy as a temporary additional vehicle. To do either of these however you must have the vehicle registration and normally would have to take the certificate of insurance along with you so need the reg a week or so in advance but most hire car companies would not be able to provide this as they dont allocate vehicles in that fashion that far ahead (plus you couldnt have a free upgrade or if your vehicle was late being returned you would have to wait and couldnt be given another car from their fleet etc)
