PS3 Running Out of Space

We have an old PS3 with a mere 40Gb hard Drive.
It is now telling me that it only has 500MB of space left available.
Just what is eating up all this space?
There is no non PS3 data on it, that I can see.
The only thing on there are a few saved game profiles which are around 4Mb each.
No doubt some software patches for games are there but typically these have been relatively small.
Is there any way of checking?

the game patches can be quite big, upto a gig or so. You should replace the hdd, ive got a 750 gig drive in mine0

You could always do a factory reset, but save all ur data onto a USB stick first & then reload it. You will need to retweek all ur settings but that shouldn't take long. It will be like having a new machine, or you can just upgrade the hdd.

Is it just a standard hard drive, like i put in my PC or would I need something special?
How do you format it/get it to work?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

When you say all my data presumably you mean just my profile/game progress stuff i.e. less than the 39Gb of stuff.
See question to tombruton re what type of hard disk and configuration your thoughts?
Presumably I could just do a factory reset and clean it completely. How would that affect my our logins and online accounts?"If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....
