in Credit cards
I closed my account with ASDA Credit card back in March 2012. I did not receive any confirmation of the account closure so I contacted ASDA and requested a letter stating that this had been done. I was told by an advisor at ASDA that they do not send out account closure letters. I explained other card companies had sent a letter to that effect, but I was told ASDA do not and they do not have to do this?
I contacted them again straight after the call in case advisor one was fobbing me off and I was told the same thing. I thought fair enough and thought no more of it.
Today (19/06/2012) I received a letter headed Santander CARDS stating URGENT ACTION REQUIRED for you ASDA account listing my 'closed' credit card number as reference stating our banking details have changed.
I immediately contacted Asda and spoke to manager who confirmed the account was closed but would not send a letter to confirm this. She stated that I had received the letter as my records are kept by Asda for six years and that is the law.
Can anyone confirm if any of the above is correct?

Check your credit file to see if it shows as settled0

You're refusing to believe that they've closed your account, despite being told by 3 different people that it is in fact closed?
If you distrust Santander Cards (not Asda) so much, then the only way to confirm is to spend £2 (or get a free trial) and order your credit file from one of the CRAs.
By way of a similar example, M&S wrote to me confirming my account was closed. Then, when I cancelled the DD with my bank, they wrote to me again telling me that the DD had been cancelled and I should make alternative arrangements for making payment.
In other words, these things are largely automated and I wouldn't worry too much.0 -
Its not a case of not believing. I was told verbally the account was closed. I accepted it, although I have had other cards and when I closed them I have received written confirmation that the account was closed.
In truth it was forgotten about until yesterday when I was sent a mail shot with my 'closed' credit card number on it from Santander making reference to your Asda card number.
It came to my address but for all Asda knew I could have moved house. I thought closure meant closed, ended, finshed, had I wanted mail or services from them I would have asked. Plus its caused grief from the other half who now thinks I kept the card on the sly and didnt close it in the first place.........0 -
You've received this 'urgent' letter because everybody else who has, or has recently had, an Asda CC will have also got one.
When companies change their banks, it's kind of a big deal (why do they do it!), since they'll have droves of customers with standing orders, direct debits, payment slips, etc. with old, wrong bank details on. It's much less hassle for the company to contact pretty much everyone to inform them of their change of bank details, as to not do so would cause some major headaches. (some people who've closed their accounts still have balances to pay back!).
Go to noddle.co.uk to see your Callcredit credit history file. The Asda card should be showing, and should be showing as settled.
Don't panic if it's not showing (Callcredit is the poor relation of the credit reference agencies, but it's free for life), or if it's still showing as open right now (there can be delays in what companies tell the credit agencies, and when).0 -
I had the same problem with Capital One.
I closed the account and heard nothing from them in the ensuing months.
About a year afterwards, I realised that the DD facility was still open, so I cancelled that on-line with my bank and within a couple of days got a letter from Capital One stating that I should make alternative arrangements to pay them.
I just ignored it and, 5 years leter, have never heard from them again.0 -
My Mum was concerned when she received a very similar letter, albeit for a different store account, so I did a quick search and came up with a Police warning notice about a scam.
As a new user to this forum, I can't post links. So search for "Gloucestershire Constabulary - Customers Told to Beware Bank Letter Scam" in Google and hopefully it'll be the first one that comes up (dated 12 Dec 2011).0 -

"The scaremongering letter which begins “Urgent Action Required” states that the bank chain's details have changed and that a new account number and sort code must be used to make payments.
Force Crime Reduction Officer Paul Francis said: “Banks never issue this type of letter so please don’t be fooled."
Actually this was a genuine letter and Santander Store cards changed their sort code from a Lloyds 30-XX-XX sort code to a Santander 09 -XX- XX sort codeHi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
