how to find an affordable hairdresser in Surrey?

Hi all,

I have joined this forum only today and already got lots of inspirations!

I hope somebody also has an idea how to find a hairdresser which I can afford without having to sacrifice a weeks' earnings? I am always shocked at how much they charge here and just can't understand it. I come from Germany, and over there are lots of hairdressers now where you pay 10 Euros for everything you want, like colour 10 Euros per 10 highlights, plus cut 10 Euros etc. You have to blowdry your hair yourself but that's fine for the price you pay! I have now been living in the UK for more than 3 years and every time I need some highlights they charge me at least 100£ (without the haircut, that's extra), and it's not a super posh salon I went to. I have checked the prices of every single salon in my area (I live in Woking/Surrey) and they are all about the same, so I can't see how I can cut this bill.

Now I am wondering: are there mobile hairdressers who can do a colour refreshing at home (not very convenient due to little available space, but if it's worth the money I might consider it)? How do I find them? Or are there people who let's say learnt the job but are on maternity leave at the moment and do some hairdressing from home for pocket money? Can anyone recommend someone?

Any ideas???? I'd be extremely grateful for any suggestions!

Thanks

Lilly x

Have you checked if you have a local college which teaches hairdressing? They usually take appointments for year 3 students (ie final year of their qualification) to do cuts, blowdry, colouring etc etc and they are usually very cheap.

The only downside, in my experience, is that they do take longer than a salon, but they often have appointments after 4pm at least one day of the week, so if you set aside the time you can get a great result (as even though they are year 3 students, they are still supervised) for not very much money.

I too usually visit trainees for a free haircut, but at salons rather than colleges. In London you can find these appointments listed on Gumtree. These are usually available on weekdays and as balletshoes says take aaaaaages. But I have had some very good haircuts, much better than the 'budget' salons I have used previously!

    Have you tried SuperCuts?

I have tried Supercuts but they were sooo unfriendly and just blurted at me that they "don't do colours on a saturday" so I did not bother asking further questions.

I don't think there is a hairdressing college anywhere around, I have just googled them and would probably have to go to London which makes it unprofitable again.

I like the idea of asking at salons about the trainee haircut! My only problem is that I work full time and have a really long commute home, so usually by the time I get home everything is closed and this most probably will be a problem with this one as well, but it's always worth asking.

I see you arme in woking. I don't know about woking, but there certainly used to be one just a hop skip and a jump away at guildford. Check the guildford college website. Have you googled for one at woking?

Thanks lostinrates, that's a great tip! I have just found their website and their prices sound brilliant, even though I might need to take half a day off work to go there as they only seem to make appointments during the week, but that's worth it every couple of months :-)

I'll definitely give them a go!

    Thanks
