Hi all,
Does anyone know of anyone around the Birmingham area?
I need a structural engineer to calculate the size of the RSJ needed.
The builder quoting said it'd be £50-100 for the structural engineer... I don't know where to look or what qualifications they need to have to be legit
Also, if I am knocking an internal wall, originally the end of the house, to properly connect to what used to be the coal house but is now a bathroom, do I need building regs?
thank you

When employing a structural engineer ensure that they are chartered and a member of either the IStructE or the ICE. A chartered engineer will have CEng after their name.
On the IStructE website you can search for engineers in your area.
http://www.findanengineer.com/ although that may yeild limited results.
The yellow pages will give you contact details and then all you need to do is ask them their qualifications.
EDIT: Also the cost will probably be closer to £100 than £50.0 -

Yes.
You will have to bring your coal house up to current Building Regs for habitable space, in particular insulation and means of escape in a fire.
It might actually be easier to knock it down and put up a small timber-frame extension.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -
