All these BMW vs ALFA posts reminds me of when I bought an Alfa 156 when they first came out. The Salesman took me on a testdrive and when I asked about alfa's legendary "reliability" he actually told me this joke:
"When BMW are testing a new car, the put a cat inside the car, close the doors and close and seal all the vents. They come back the next day, and if the cat is still alive then the car has failed the test as the car is not airtight.
When Alfa Romeo are testing a new car, they put a cat inside the car, close the doors and close and seal all the vents. They come back the next day, and if the cat is still inside the car, then the car has passed the test"
I mean, come on!!!!!!! I was having a test drive for a 20k car and even the salesman was basically telling me how awful the build quality was!!!!
BTW i did buy the car, and loved it. It had a beautiful engine note, had good looks, and was DIFFERENT from all the BMW 320 repmobiles on the road.
However, I had oil leaks galore, a headlight unit that kept failing (sometimes needed a new bulb, sometimes a a good thwack would fix it!!!!).
So when the 3 yr warranty expired, I got the hell out of dodge.
Whilst I loved that car and looked back on it with fond memories, I have to say I will probably not ever consider an alfa again. Just too much chance of financial pain (as my mechanical skills are just as good as my DIY skills. ie. non-existant.)0 -
We've just bought a Lexus, straight after owning a 3 series BMW and will never go back to BMW. It is whisper quiet, comfortable and fast.0

They do say you should only buy an Alfa if you live close enough to push it to the garage.
I've no idea how this thread can be comparing a large 5 executive saloon to a small Pokey little hatchback. The two cars are in completely different markets.0 -
Back on topic!
Why don't you lease a new 3 series? Low deposit and around £270pm. Some say leasing is a waste of money but if you want a new car without a huge loan this is a great option.0 -
Thanks John.
I've thought about leasing. But I also think I want something to show for it at the end of the payment term, even though it is a depreciating asset.
I went into the dealer on Saturday, and after discussing my requirements and the obligatory attempted upsell, I got a finance quote for buying the car which worked out at about 13% APR with a 5k deposit! No thanks!
On my online banking this morning there was an offer for a loan of 16,500 @ 8.8percent. If I can get this I might go down this route. I think being able to pay cash gives me more options in terms of where I buy it from and also potential negotiation power on the price.
We shall see!
Actually I might buy an Alfa Romeo...0 -
I know it's a bit cheeky but if buying from a dealer negotiate a cash price based on using their finance. The receive commission so may offer a lower price to you, just decline the offer after this point.0
