Lost an apple tree in the recent winds. Have cut it down and now have a space for replanting.

Location is good with lots of sun. In SE England.

Want a apple variety that is sweet, crunchy and for eating.

From supermarket SWIMBO likes Fugi and Royal Gala. Would either of these grow well in the UK?

TIA

    I'd recommend a trip here

That's a good idea, you won't be planting it till Autumn anyway.

Be aware that you shouldn't put the same tree back in the same place as the previous one. Google replant disease.

Royal Gala from the supermarkets taste completely different from the tree anyway ;)

This is a good resource for apple characteristics. I think there's also a search that lets you select the qualities you're looking for, and it lists suitable matches. :)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

And on similar vein, to the possible horror of many here, so does UK grown Golden Delicious

However I would go for one that is more unusual or not available from a shop

I love James Grieve, beautiful, juicy & crisp early apple. But is does not keep, hence never in a shop

No doubt the link provided will give you more ideas

You will have to be aware of possible pollination problems before you buy

I note your location is SE England

How about attending an apple tasting day later in the year?

And no doubt RHS Wisley will have one as well

Google apple tasting + your location

    Good luck

And home grown Spartan can be amazing, particularly if you eat it when it is at its best - December to March.

I second Golden Delicious - we offer ours to people and get them guess what they are - they never can as they are so different from the supermarket pap - amazing fresh from the tree

Otherwise we like Spartan and James Grieve too
