On old school monitors there used to be the stretch/shift buttons on the monitor where you could adjust the positioning of the viewable area. Maybe there's some kind of shortcut you've pressed on your laptop which minimizes it the smallest possible display area?

I've not heard of anything like this though to be honest. I'm assuming you've tried rebooting already?

What is the exact make and model of the laptop?

If you right click the visible part of the screen, do you get an option for screen resolution, if so, what does it say the resolution is?
