OPUS - my tale of woe

Options
I had a Citi card for years, this was then transferred to OPUS who honored my lifetime balance transfer rate of 6.1%

I only had this balance on the card and was paying it down, £1,600 to go (credit limit of £10,800)

Anyway my son came to me for some money, just about £1,500 was needed, so I paid for him using the card - he immediately gave me £750 which I paid into the account 19 days after the purchase.

When I got my next statement I noticed that they had allocated the money to my lower interest rate - which shouldn't happen, highest first says the statement.

So I called them and after a few days they got back to me and said that it only counts if the purchase is on the statement and my sons purchases would appear next time - I explained that they were charging me interest on the purchases at the higher rate and the wording on their statement is I felt quite clear.

All three members of staff agreed with me, but said it was "head office" who said "no"

So I feel very cheated by them, had I of known, I would of course kept his cash until the next statement.

My son has now repaid me in full, but I am trapped into paying the higher rate on part of my balance.

They offered me a refund on the extra interest for one month as a gesture of goodwill to a long term customer - but refused to redress the balances. I told them "no"

Needless to say - I will never use the company again.:(

All cards do the same to my knowledge, so probably best not to avoid all cards from now on, not just Opus.
  • Well a result.

Wrote letter - got standard "we are right you are wrong - it's in the terms and conditions" reply.

So called them and asked to close the account - I explained that they were charging me interest at the higher level from the moment the transaction was made, so whilst it may not of been on the statement, I did indeed have a higher interest balance.

Three days later, a call, reversing their original "final decision" :rotfl: and £50 compensation. :T

OK, nice work. But still, they were right. Payments go against trans on the statement first.

Indeed, that's what the terms and conditions say, but the information on the back of the statement didn't and there in lies why they indeed were wrong ..... if the information had said "on this statement" do you honestly think I would of paid the cash in?..... Do I strike you as stupid?

Anyway, my son has paid his debt to me, the higher balance has been settled in full and the remaining £1,600 transferred to 0% with Tesco
