Can part-time students claim JSA?

I was just wondering what the rules are regarding JSA and part-time students.

I'm currently in the 'writing-up' stage of a part-time PhD. Would I be able to claim JSA if the worst came to the worst?

From what I've read (e.g. here: http://www.shef.ac.uk/union/student-advice-centre/academic-university/post-graduate-issues/post-graduate-funding.htm) I would, but I'd like confirmation from one of the knowledgeable people on here

Yes if you are classed as part time (ie don't meet the definition of 'full time' - see link) you can claim. You will need to meet the normal criteria relating to being actively seeking and available for work etc.

Just wondered if it has always been a part time course, then if mouthing else has changed then it begs the question why claim now if not claimed before. One answer may be that you are beyond the normal time for course completion, did you have funding initially for example which has now finished?

I had funding initially but it fell through after the first year so I had to switch to part-time and then work as much as I could to support myself. Now I'm nearly finished (as I say, writing-up status) and I'm just trying to cover all my bases in case work dries up.
