Talking of value brands, had to laugh at my Mum and DD this morning. DD visits Mum for her lunch usually and Mum bought Tesco Value Ketchup, which DD pronounced she didn't like. "Oh yes you do!" says I. "I don't I hate it!" says DD.

"Funny that" I reply, "As you've been eating value ketchup for the last 12 months because I refill the squeezy heinz bottle

I used to go to Tesco, it would take an hour, and I'd spend £80-£100. Now I park up outside co-op in town, go to the butcher, greengrocer and co-op, and call in at Tesco to "mop up". Total time taken is now 1 1/2 hours...and I spend between £50-£70 QUOTE]

Glad you seem to have a decent Co-op, mine is atrocious, it stocks nothing and what it does sell it way over the price of the major supermarkets, cheaper for me to do an on line shop and have it delivered than to shop at Co-op :(. My local green grocer's veg is never fresh and worth buying.

Theses two shops are right next to each other, have a captive market of young, old and many with out transport, a high street that has nothing more than charity shops, estate agents, banks and two of the same chain pharmacy's, so even if you want to avoid the big supermarkets you have little choice to support the local shops.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

I agree about the Co-op - I have 3 within half a mile of me, 2 of them are proper supermarket size, but I can't do a proper shop in any of them, and unless its on special offer, its always more expensive in there than any of the other supermarkets. The Co-op, for me, is the corner shop for milk and bread, and crisps if they are on special offer.

I too think you may have to take a good look at why you shop every day, do you get a rush and then a comedown when you spend money? I don't fritter money on clothes and stuff but I love food shopping (the Cancerian in me isn't happy unless everyone is well fed :o )

I shop online, I start by going through the BOGOFs and half price (for things we would eat anyway, not impulse buys!) then build the rest of each meal around those ingredients then I go through my favourites. I shop usually every 2 weeks and DH picks up fresh stuff throughout the week as and when we need it.
