HOT WATER tap+Washer HELP

I need to replace the washer of the hot water tap in the downstairs WC. The hot water comes from a tank in the airing cupboard upstairs . Any ideas how do I turn off the hot water? There are a few taps in the airing cupboard where the tank is. I thought I turned off the cold water feed to the immersion tank and let the hot water out but when the hot water ran out, cold water started comming out of the hot water tap. At this stage I gave up.
Any ideas please?

  • Try turning off the heating and hot water and then close all the velves, but don't forget to open them again afterwards!

If that does not work tie up the ball valve in the header tank.

Here is how to change the washer, just incase ;)

turn off the main stop c o c k on the rising main where it enters the house.
(you may have another stop valve, but the first main c o c k is the crucial one).
open all the sink/bath taps to let the water run out. then when all the water stops you can do the repair/s.
    Get some gorm.

If you are very lucky and had a good plumber, there will be a service tap on the pipe near the tap.

A service tap is a small in line tap, usually operated with a slot screwdriver, that allows you to easily and quickly turn off the supply to change washers, fit new taps etc. When turned on, the slot in the tap will be in line with the pipe. To turn it off, turn it 90 degrees so that the slot is across the pipe.

Have a look at the pipe below the tap.

Edit, it is called an "isolating valve" in the link above.

    Good luck. :)
