PC - Lost sound

I've lost all sound on my pc.
History -
several days back I noticed the sound(speech) was odd on Iplayer type progs , sort of echo and glitchy - too annoying to listen to.
Today I've realised it occurs on things like youtube as well, but is ok if I play a CD.
I had some spare speakers so plugged them in but a similar odd sound. Plugged old speakers back in and now no sound at all from either set of speakers.
tried, googling and it mentioned stuff about echo and microphone settings, but I don't have a microphone. I did go into setting and played with a few but think I put them back as was.
So my plan is to find and reinstall drivers and if that doesn't work get a new sound card.
Has anyone got any other suggestions?
It's Windows XP and Sound Blaster Audigy card

Thanks0 -
well if you've checked the settings in Control Panel, and you checked the device isnt showing any errors in Device Manager, then the only other plan is to get another cheapo sound card and plug it in and see if that works, to prove the other card. Put 'sound card' into ebay you get loads, like £5 each.
Whats it like through headphones/earphones?**** I hereby relieve MSE of all legal responsibility for my post and assume personal responsible for all posts. If any Parking Pirates have a problem with my post then contact me for my solicitors address.*****0 -
Don't disagree with any of the above. however, many boards these days have onboard sound. If you know yours doesn't, nuff said. However it it does, remove the audigy card and try the native sound.
What board is it anyway?0 -

Thanks for replying, and quickly too.
No sound through headphones. Pretty sure speakers ok as there is a crackle as you turn from low to high volume.
No errors in device manager, but thanks for mentioning as I must have memory loss., it's eons since I last used Device Manager.
I hadn't realised sound cards so cheap.0 -

Mainboard : MSI (MS-6741)
It may well have native sound . We had problems with no sound when we first got the PC(2nd hand). Couldn't get sound to work so bought the sound card, and all fine for many years till now.Toxteth_OGrady wrote: »Run the sound tests in dxdiag
DirectSound test results: Failure at step 19 (User verification of software): HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code), this was after I answered 'No, I didn't hear sound'.
Thanks for help, I'll try driver tomorrow.0 -

A BIOS update while you are about it might help too.0 -

The distorted sound turned out to be a flash player update causing the error in Chrome. Turned out to be ok in Firefox until I allowed another flash update(hoping it would fix problem when using Chrome), but it made firefox worse so I have downgraded to 10.3 for the time being.
