So let me get this right.

You suggest that they authorised the payment, and you didn't even know anything about it?

If that's correct, call the bank and not only ask for all the charges refunded, but also a reversal of the transaction you didn't even authorise. Go for some compo too for stress and suffering caused ;)

Presumably you have evidence you paid your Gym by other means?

the gym went for a direct debit but it failed due to me changing banks but they had mt card details as backup,so instead of going back in for d/debit they used my card details and santander authorised it?if i had known about this i would just have paid the measley £15 but i assumed everyhting was ok as i never heard from either the gym or bank until yesterday mightly peeed off santander not helpful at all put stop on account for 3 months as long as i pay £10 next month towards it i dont have problem re inbursing the bank for the £15.00 what shud i do

What does your Gym agreement say about paying their fees?

Presumably as the Gym already had your debit card details, and used them to recover your failed Direct Debit mandate, then your agreement with them allows this? If not, then as pooch suggests, you should contact Santander and dispute not the fees, but the original card transaction. When that is reversed, then any fees steming directly from that fraudulent transaction will also be reversed.

All you'll then need to sort out paying the gym fee you haven't paid from many weeks ago.
