My uncle emigrated to Canada when I was tiny... and for years he's been hoping we could go and visit him in Toronto. He's approaching 75 so 'before it gets too late' we're going out this summer.
Flights are booked, and we want to be flexible - rent a car, and just pick up motels as and when.
But we do want to see Niagara... so I'm looking for any MSE recommendations for decent hotels in that area. I'd rather be a short drive away and stay somewhere decent, rather than paying through the nose for a hotel which boats a view of the falls.
Anyone any ideas? I'm not suggesting a budget, as I expect prices are quite high near Niagara, and it's only for 1 or 2 nights.
Thanks all! :j

With the first 2 being the cheapest.0 -
We were there last year and stayed in Toronto, the OP is a great help to you, I have stayed at some of the motels and found them very acceptable,
Obviously, a trip on the 'Maid if the Mist' is the 'Must-do!' we absolutely loved it!.
We were on a bus tour and should have visited Niagara-on-the Lake but we were behind on time, I suggest you have a visit, really beautiful!
Good Trip!Filiss0 -
We stayed at the Radisson in Niagara Falls last year. Great hotel, would highly recommend it. That said, it certainly is not cheap. Holidays are our only vice so we do it in style.
Have to say we were a bit disappointed in the town though, very much aimed at young tourists, a little on the gaudy side. We would not choose to spend time in the town itself.
While you are in Toronto you absolutely have to do the CN Tower - fantastic views. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -
I went many moons ago and I have to say that the US side of the falls is an absolute dump (unless they've improved it quite considerably). The Canadian side is a typical tourist resort, but the falls more than make up for the tourist tat and the dump on the US side.0

If youre renting a car you could just drive there for the day, you dont have to stay over night if you dont want to. I saw a lot of B&B type places there.
Or, we took the train from Toronto - cheaper if you book online in advance.
And yes make sure you do Maid of the Mist!0 -
I went overboard on my trip to Niagara and took the Gray Line Presidential tour, it lasts all day and includes lunch and evening meal. I had a great time and with only 8 of us on the bus the guide was always on hand to answer questions.
I stayed at a Howard Johnson Motel on the American side about 5 miles from the falls and at the time (2007) it was mid-priced at $50/night, the tour bus picked me up there so no worries about parking.0 -
Travelzoo do a lot of special offers for hotels at Niagara Falls, especially the Canadian Travelzoo site. We went to Niagara Falls a couple of years ago and got a really good deal via Travelzoo which included a hotel room overlooking the falls and a 3 course evening meal meal and a nearby restaurant. There are several Travelzoo sites but you need to look at the Canadian one for the best offers. Good luck!0

Mariott Fallsview.
We stayed there last year, and this photo was taken from our room. Worth it for the day and night views. We only stayed one night as there's not a huge amount to do.
Saying that, Niagara on the Lake is gorgeous and there are numerous vineyards worth visiting in that area.
As others suggest; you can drive there in a couple of hours from Toronto, so you don't need to find accomodation!!Legal team on standby0 -
Thanks everyone for such excellent & speedy replies. :T What a great pic Malkie760

I'd definitely second Malkie's suggestion of the Marriott (from the picture I'll swear I stayed in the same room:))... not cheap but maybe worth a wander in looking a room at 6pm or so and you might get a sizable discount if business not too good that day.
Also a crackin brazilian restaurant just up the street last time I was there... fixed price for dinner and eat as much as you want.0
