Hi,
My father in-law has had his car offroad since 2010 with SORN and we checked his account today and hes been paying car insurance all this time, am i right in thinking that when a car is SORN you do not need to pay insurance? If so is there any way of getting the money back that hes been paying?
Thanks
Adrian

You don't need to have insurance by law if the car is SORNed, but you do have the benefit of the cover (against fire/theft/damage etc), depending on the level of cover you have.
Unless the insurance company have made a mistake in taking this money, and he had cancelled his cover in 2010, then a refund is doubtful.
(If there are any circs that he could use (eg he is unable to manage his affairs), then it's worth seeing if they would make a goodwill gesture - though he will have had the benefit of the cover throughout.0 -
What type car is it? Is it particularly rare or expensive car? 2 years is a long time to sorn a car and insure it if it's only an everyday runaround.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

The normal route is to convert the cover to "laid-up" so the vehicle is still covered for non-driving related risks, such as fire and theft.
It is incumbent on the insured to inform the insurer if such a change is required.I am a mortgage broker. I'm assuming he let the Insurer help themselves to renew? They should have written to say they would be renewing, but if it has been awhile you need to get I recalled within days, not months.0
