0844 numbers - can they only be dialled through the line provider?

Hello

I discovered that I cannot dial 0844 numbers via 18185 - is this the norm for all the prefix-type and Telediscount-type providers?

Is this why 0844 numbers do not appear in the MSE Call Checker?

Out of interest, does anyone know why 18185 won't carry this type of call?

Thank you.

Welcome to the MSE forums satellitebadger.

18185 probably don't carry them because of the high number of different rates (0.5p to 5p per minute) and the need to negotiate their cut with the many firms which operate them.

If you have a BT line, always dial 0844 numbers on BT (use a 1280 prefix if you have a CPS provider) to ensure you only get charged BT's rates.

BTW, 0844 numbers do appear on the Callcheckers - but as the numbers to use (i.e. they're gateway numbers).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I think 18185 probably will carry this type of call but I doubt that it will be cheaper than BT (or whoever you pay for calls). I think that the 0844 numbers you are trying to dial probably belong to another Finarea company (18185 is a Finarea company) - Finarea seem to block those.
