I would like to my documents to be the same and up to date on both pc and my laptop.
I've been reading about windows live mesh

Is that the sort of thing I need? Anything better?

+1 for SugarSync.
For a typical review have a look at :

There are also some really useful Sugarsync tutorials on YouTube.0 -
I use DropBox (free/2GB) and Syncplicity (paid for).
DropBox is great as it also allows you to view / send documents from your iPad / Android / Phone.0 -
Another vote for dropbox. I've now got 9.5GB of space free. I use it for work now - we can all look at a syncronised folder of documents whilst also being able to share it with people who can 'look but not edit'0

I have been using Dropbox for some time now and have found it very reliable for syncing my laptop and desktop. If you keep your eyes open you can get free extra space by recommending friends, entering the annual Dropquest treasure hunt etc. One unique feature (I think) is its ability to sync files across your local network when available, this can be faster and reduces internet data use.
Sugarsync does have the advantage of being able to sync any folder on your PCs whereas Dropbox only syncs the contents of the "dropbox" folder.

This is great. Should have done something about it ages ago. I'd rather not have to pay.
Many thanks.0 -

I've initially homed in on the sugarsync purely for the size of free initial space.
However your point highlighted in red needs consideration.
Is the process constantly working in the background or can you set it to sync at specific times when internet data use is free?0 -

Dropbox syncs changes very soon after they are made, so is running constantly. You can limit bandwidth or pause syncing but it is not possible to automatically schedule syncing.
