Re-booking Experince with Jet2

I was due to go on holiday with my family to Spain on the 2nd June, but shortly beforehand my son became ill with Guillain–Barr! syndrome. He was in intensive care, we were stuck in hospital - no laptop - no wi-fi - no insurance, what a nightmare. I'd booked everything myself online and actually I got most of my money back.

My experience with Jet2 - slightly different, I rang their contact centre (60p / min) and was told I could re-book the flights upto 4 hours before they were due to depart and pay an admn fee of £35 which seemed at the time good news. I didn't at that point know when we would be able to go, so I had to leave it at that point. I rang back to check a couple of points (60p per minute) - is it £35 per person? Actually it was £35 per journey so £35 x 10. So £350. Also, we were only allowed to re-book from the same departure and destination - Newcastle to Murcia in our case. Our original flights were £872.21 so it still seemed reasonable.

When I actually rang book to re-book (60p per min) they actually charged me - £682.13 - the cost of just booking the same flights on the Jet2 website was £689.90. So actually it would have been cheaper to just forget the flights as we could have booked from another airport cheaper and gone were we wanted to.

I complained to Jet2, I don't understand how they can come up with this amount. Especially as the new flights were on the face of it cheaper than the original flights.

This was their response;

We have taken a look at your booking and you were charged correctly. When you make a date change this is subject to an administration fee of 35gbp plus an increase in fare if there is any per person per sector. This is a fundamental part of our terms and conditions and what you agreed to at the time of booking. The difference in the outwards sector was 4.00gbp and that for the return trip was 55.50gbp per person. For the flights alone it came to a total of 129.50gbp per person to amend it and extra fees of 15.92gbp for adult meals uplift for both outwards and return Journey and 23.70gbp in ccfees and a 4.99gbp discount on child meals. This brought it to a net total of 682.13gbp.

We regret we are not able to assist any further from the contact centre.

Is there any point me trying to pursue this further - of should i just give up?

    I'm genuinely sorry to hear about your son, that must have been very frightening.

    No insurance? Not a great deal of sympathy here I'm afraid. You were lucky that you were able to recover other costs.

    Do you have any travel insuarance automatically included with bank accounts/credit cards that you may have forgotten about?

    My other suggestion would be to try and reclaim the taxes on the unused flights.
