Well I am very glad I have raised this topic as I have clearly got us all thinking about our home safety.

I do not like paying so much for these devices, yet I also agree that they are very important.

So, I shall be ordering one now.

Thank you all very much. But I still think they should be subsidised or free, seeing as this nanny state in which we live is so keen to take control of every other aspect of our lives.
  • Thanks just ordered one as my old one is dead and these are a lot cheaper than what I paid last time.

Glad to be of assistance, that's what MSE is all about, isn't it? :)

If it's not an HMO you wouldn't have been liable for anything. If it was an HMO, the alarms should have been wired-in. As a responsible landlord, I provide smoke alarms, but I CBA to go round checking the batteries.

It wasn't an HMO, it was our family home and our son lived there with his girlfriend and a lodger. We have moved back into it now!

I did think I would be liable though, if the smoke alarms were not working properly. Thanks for that information.

  • Thanks for the link seven-day-weeekend. I really need to get round to having one of these as my boiler is over 10 years old now. When I had my last service the npower fitter tried to flog me one that he "had on the van" for about £30 so I was a bit put off, but this looks ideal.
