Nokia 6700 phone camera on standby

My Nokia 6700 classic's camera seems to have gone permanently into standby.

When I press the camera button, I get "Camera on standby" in a white box on the display and button labels Exit (right button), Continue (middle/rocker button) and Options (left button). If I press Continue then there is a brief pause and then the "Camera on standby" box appears.

My memory card has free space, my phone is fully charged, and I've tried the following:
  1. Taken out & reinserted the battery. No change - problem persists.
  2. Taking out the micro-SD card with the phone on. No change - problem persists.
  3. Taking out the phone battery and the micro-SD for a few minutes, then putting in the battery but not the micro-SD. On powering on the phone asked for the date & time (which I set to today/now). But on trying to use the camera it did the same thing again. No change - problem persists.
  4. Taking out the battery for a minute or so, then putting in micro-SD and battery in that order. Again it asked for date & time when I powered it on (which I set). But the same thing happened. No change - problem persists.
It's a good phone, so I'm hoping it's not developed a fault...

Could anybody help me out and let me know if there's a magic key combination or anything else I could try out to get the camera back?
