Safety goggles when using a pertrol lawnmower?

Hi folks,

I have a rover petrol lawnmower and never thought about using safety goggles when using it, or for that matter I have never seen anyone do so.

Yesterday when mowing near a window it seems a stone thrown by by the blades hit one of my windows, putting a small hole and long crack in it, so have to replace the sealed unit.

I never thought this could happen with a ordinary petrol lawnmower and raises the question of, should everyone who uses a lawnmower wear safety goggles?

Thanks

I always use goggles when using the electric hedge clipper, one bit of twig in your eye and you'll agree!
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I would imagine the instructions would say use eye protection along with other relevant correct PPE, so once you have read them you should know what to wear when using the piece of equipment.

I don't use goggles because the angle at which a stone can get hit is not likely to hit you above shin height, but do wear sensible foot wear, boots or safety boots if you have some are not a bad idea. I too have had a conservatory window smashed by my petrol mower if its any consolation! I now drape a tarpaulin in front of the windows as a screen. Having the mower set low helps as stones should get caught by the mowers skirt.

It does make you wonder. You see council employees cutting grass verges all time with little or no protection and we all know it can be full of dog dirt let alone other things people disguard sometimes especially in rough areas. I am sure council must have done a risk assessment mind you I have heard some peoples cars have got hit by flying projectiles by grass cutters

Try and pick up as many stones as possible before you start, this helps reduce this and helps keep the blade sharp

True story, there was a guy strimming his lawn in a pair of flip flops ( already know what you're thinking, and you'd be right) he cut of one of his toes. To add insult to injury, the toe then hit him in the eye and blinded him in it!

Not strictly on topic, however it does make you wonder, it may not be likely to happen but there's always a possibility it could happen!
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
