I have to take thyroxine too since i had most of my thyroid gland removed almost 10 years ago. In 10 years ive only had to have my medication adjusted once but my GP told me it does have to be checked even more regularly if i am on a diet as the amount my body will need will decrease as my body gets smaller.

As I understand it diabetes and an underactive thyroid are both autoimmune diseases. According to the NHS site someone with type 1 diabetes is at higher risk of developing an underactive thyroid.

I have an underactive thyroid and don't think it's a big deal at all. I just take my pills each morning and have a blood test every 6 months and that's it.

Another sufferer of an underactive thyroid here - do read the websites that harrys nan posted links to, as they do offer the best advice - yes there will be free prescriptions and regular blood tests to monitor it but thyroxine does not always keep it under control.

I do also think that a lot of people underestimate thyroid disorders and how they can affect your whole life, so it is best to be prepared with all of the information you can get. There is also a good thyroid group on Health Unlocked.

I was diagnosed with type 1 when I was 3. I was diagnosed with Coeliac's disease when I was 9. I can't remember how old I was when I was diagnosed with either an overactive or underactive thyroid. That shows how much of an impact it made on my life compared to the other two :o

I could be talking out of my backside since it's been so long since the doctor talked about it, but I seem to remember he mentioned the endocrine system (basically glands). Once you have X - in my case, diabetes - you could also develop Y or Z. If your daughter didn't get an underactive thyroid, there's other things she could develop regardless of how well controlled she is.
