SAGA CAR INSURANCE - never again !

Options
We are having a major problem with Saga regarding our (Protected 9+years) No Claims discount/bonus.

We have had one of our cars insured with Saga for the last four years but when the renewal came through this year, it had increased considerably so we decided to go onto the comparison sites, confirm the usual details and changed to a comparable but cheaper insurer, Prudential. When Saga's letter confirming our NCD entitlement arrived, I simply forwarded it to the Prudential as they requested. Two weeks later, we received a letter from the Prudential stating that they could not give us the full 9 years entitlement for our NCD as stated because Saga's letter had stated that our NCD was "60%, representing 4 years" !

We rang Saga to find out why, on their letter, they had stated "4 years" when we have had a protected NCD/bonus for more than 10, their response was that when we completed the online application in June 2008 and put that we had the maximum NCD, they basically took our word for it and in their words "take it on faith and never ask for proof from your previous insurer for this" !! I was flabbergasted with this comment and told the agent I couldn't believe a company like Saga would operate like this, opening themselves up "on faith" to what could be someone telling them any old rubbish about their NCD/Bonus but they simply said that is how they had operated for the last 55 years without a problem.

Now, Prudential on the other hand have told us that they are constantly having problems receiving correct NCD/bonus details from Saga and that so many people have had the same argument. They admit they have other companies who are similar in not being helpful in divulging information but no-one as bad as Saga. Saga's response to my problem is to speak to the insurer we were with before them to ask for proof or our NCD, given that I no longer have any of our old insurance records, assuming of course that they can or want to be that helpful. Otherwise, if we cannot get proof of our NCD, Prudential will increase our premium by £184 and we, for future reference, will only be able to show a maximum of 5 years NCD. Surely this cannot be right that we could possibly now be penalised due to one company's ridiculous way of operating?

Any advice....please.

This issue isn't seen just with Saga.

If you are still in the cooling off period you could shop around again and see if there are better deals when you quote the 4 years you have the proof for.

If outside the cooling off period, then check with pru for the total cost of cancelling to see of this would be a cost effective option.

From now on keep a paper trail of NCD to show any future insurer.

Oh no! I have just switched over to Saga:eek:

However, I still have proof of my no claims from my previous insurer so will definitely keep this now.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time
