Panacur or Drontal?

Soon be time to worm the cats again & I thought about seeing how much Panacur cost online compared to at the vets.

Had a quick look on here for any comments and it seems some prefer Drontal to Panacur.

So I'm wondering is it just a case of using a particular brand because that's what the vet uses, or is one better than the other?

They've never gone a full 3 months without needing another dose so I wondered if it would be worth giving Drontal a try to see if it's any better.

  • Not tried Panacur for the cats (used to use it for the horses and it was great for them) but I do use Drontal on a regular basis (and for the dog as well).

Touch wood, never have a problem with any of mine - although how I really don't know as big cat is always munching away on something outside  so I guess it must work pretty well.

ETA I did notice Panacur for the cats at the vets once and asked about it and was told to stick with Drontal too.

Didn't think of that. Even disguising powder's not always that easy but I definitely don't fancy my chances against these two with tablets.

Looks like I'm sticking with the Panacur for now.

As far as I can tell it treats certain types of tapeworm, but not the common tapeworm.

Certainly any symptoms seem to clear up on my two after I've given them a dose of Panacur, but never seem to last that long. Perhaps they've been catching mice and not telling me!

I'll have a word with the vet next time I'm there and see what she recommends.

I regularly worm my 5 with Drontal. Getting the tablets in isn't easy but it always gets done with two strapping male moggies and 2 naughty Bengal adolescents ;) The only one I have a real struggle with? Little Friday - the smallest, oldest and physically weakest of them all! She is a nightmare :rotfl:
