bad credit record?

under what circumstances would i get a bad credit record?would i have to have a ccj or iva or bankruptcy,or could it simply be as a result of slow or erratic payment?
i am seriously considering not paying my last month's rent as we have had horrendous problems with the landlord and are parting on very bad terms, leading me to suspect that he will do anything he can to delay the return of my deposit.
the only thing that makes me hesitate is fear of a bad credit record.
i know two wrongs do not make a right but i have read the nightmare stories on this forum and i can't afford to wait months to get my deposit back!
i've had 18 months of hell with this landlord, eventually had to take legal action(which i can ill afford) to get out of the lease.i am in such a state of anxiety now that i have had to see my doctor and been put on anti-depressants.i just can't face a battle in the small claims court about the deposit,i think i might crack under the strain.:(

A landlord cannot place information on your credit record.
They can take you to court, but even then you would not get a bad record unless you fail to comply with the courts judgement.
  • thankyou, that's what i was hoping to hear...i am south african and there anyone you owe money to can report you to the credit bureau without even warning you.first you know of it is when you try to apply for credit!
i guess i'm just going to take a chance and not pay the last month's rent then.the deposit is 6 weeks' rent so he won't lose out.i just can't trust him to be reasonable.
