Sorn

Hi all, just wanted some help in regards to a question.

On the 3rd of this month my car insurance ran out, i decided not to renew it till the 18th as i turn 25 on the 18th and thought if i wait till then ill get a better price.

due to new goverment laws about not been allowed to have a car uninsured i had to declare my car SORN.

Now the problem comes when i want to un SORN my car. the car still has 6months tax on it, but ive been led to believe that declaring the car SORN will null my tax, and the only way to un SORN my car is to retax it.

On the application form to claim a refund for a tax disc it says i wont be eligable to claim a refund for tax if im retaxing within 21 days.

is there anyway i can unSORN my car so i am able to drive it on the 18th, without having to buy a new tax disc?

Thanks

Have you got it stored off the highway?

The government website should be able to answer your question I think....

Just leave it. It'll take them a few weeks to send the first letter to you, which simply will ask you to sorn it, or insure it.

I agree that would have been easier.

I owned an uninsured car for a few weeks earlier this year. I transferred my insurance to my new car and expected to be able to sell the old one to a friend within a few days. But he changed his mind so I advertised it. It was off road, taxed but not insured. After 3 weeks of no offers I decided to SORN it (end of month) and make it legal, but I never heard anything official either during that time or since.

It was definitely showing as uninsured on the database, which was what prompted me to sort it out. But it would be interesting to know how long in practice you have before you get fined.
