Well, I have taken the plunge and bought an LG 50" plasma (non 3D, we were not interested.
So, it is all up and running and the picture is pretty fine.
However, I have one small problem, it is ages suince I have put a system together, and the surround system is not contributing at the moment (only the TV sound).
I think that I have not connected enough items in the correct fashion.
At the moment:
Co axial lead straight from wall into back of TV.
DVD player connected by scart to TV and by optical link to surround system control unit.
Surround control unit connected to TV by audio leads (red and white high quality).
Am I correct in thinking that the co axial (ariel) lead should first be connected to the DVD player and then another lead from DVD player to surround system control box, and the co axial socket in the back of the TV ignored?
I have reached meltdown point on this one.
Cheers.

It would be unusual for a DVD player to have a coaxial input unless it has some sort of tuner in it. How many and what type of audio and/or video inputs does your surround system have? Normally you would connect the tv's optical audio output to the optical input of the surround system using a TOSlink cable. I think the red/white audio plugs would be input to tv only.

Surely the TV manual will contain recommendations for wiring together components won't it?

I have been through the manual three times, and it is pretty vague - just gives a diagram of the sockets on the outside, but no information on attaching multiple accessories. The last time I did it, was back in around 2005, when I put my system together, and followed some advice from home cinema magazine, so may try to do a web search to find that information.
The surround control has various connections, including an output/input co axial, as well as optical and ordinary audio (2 sets, because I used to have both the VCR and DVD attached to it). My surround system, the very aged but IMO quite impressive little Sony HTK 250 has a live sub woofer (which has the power lead, and the speaker outputs for 4 surround and 1 centre speaker).

Maybe you need to enable the external sound in the TV sound menu?

Make sure the phono leads (the red and white ones) are going from an OUTPUT on the TV to an INPUT on the surround sound device.
When you talk about coaxial on the surround sound, I assume you mean digital coaxial, which has a phono plug on each end, and will carry digital audio, just like optical does, but with, you know, wire, instead of optical fibre.
The coaxial for the TV is, I take it, a freeview signal from an aeriel.
