Business use?

Hi we have a fully comp policy with Admiral and only use our car to travel to work. However, I am about to start a new job where I will be an essential car-user- I will drive to work and home again, but within my work day, I will visit clients in their homes. I will not be driving clients or work equipment around with me.

My question is, does this constitute a change of use as regards our car insurance from social, domestic and commuting, to business? If yes, will it push our premiums up?

Would there be any consequence if we didn't notify the insurer? If I had a bump whilst out and about during my work day, how would the insurer know I wasn't just driving for social or domestic reasons- any accident would be unrelated to my work.

Many thanks in advance.

    Yes this constitutes business use.
If you have a bump your insurance would probably not pay out. A simple check with your employer would reveal that you were using the car for business use.

In my opinion, not worth the risk, often insurers will add on business use for as little as £20.

Yes you need to add business use and yes it will push your premiums up.

Always be honest with your insurer - giving false or inaccurate information will only cause you problems in the event of a claim e.g. if you opt for only social, domestic & pleasure use and then have a serious accident whilst using the car for business, there will no doubt be issues with any claim.

On the other hand, if you want to risk losing a payout, go for it.

In my experience, adding business use doesn't add much, if anything to the premium, but some insurers won't offer you cover if you need it.

Doing this job means I have business cover too and at renewal time many of the usual suspects are missing from the quotes on the comparison sites.

I suggest you run a couple of dummy quotes to see who is missing and what the cost might be from those who will offer cover.

Business use made my policy 99p dearer, it actually decreased the quote for my duaghter. Get a quote as a new customer with and wothout first, then you'll know if the mid term adjustment they try to charge is fair or not.

Not forgetting that your employer might also want to see business cover on your insurance before paying you any sort of mileage allowance.

My company checks insurance certs for all employees claiming mileage on an annual basis.

If the company has any understanding of Health and Safety Law etc they will check all of the driving licences and insurance certificate at regular intervals for all of their employees who drive in connection with the work.

If they don't do this they could potentially be in serious trouble in the event of an uninsured accident or a banned driver causing an accident or worse case scenario a banned driver causing a death

Although the premium for adding this on mid term may be little or nothing, expect an admin charge for processing the change.

Business use didn't push my premium up with my previous 2 insurers probably due to my occupation as I did quotes with and without. This insurer it did due to parking issues.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
