Car insurance dilemma - insuring 2 cars with only one NCB

Hi all,

My Dad suffered a stroke in the autumn and, as he is unlikely to drive a manual car again, has offered to transfer ownership of his car to me (the car is insured until September).

I already have fully comp insurance for my own car until the end of October. I live around 100 miles away and, as far as I'm aware, I cannot use my already accrued 3 yrs NCB on my insurance on my current car as well as my Dad's.

Ideally I would like to keep my current car as well for my partner to use in the future after she passes her driving test.

Any help greatly appreciated!

You are correct when you say that you cannot use your 3 years NCB on the second car. NCB can only be used on 1 car at a time.

The best thing to do would be to approcah the insurer who insures your own car and see if they can offer you a discount if you insure the second car with them.

You will also need to tell insurers if your partner is going to become the main user as she will be a newly qualified driver and therefore will attract an inexperience loading.

Once she passes her test you may be better biting the bullet and get her insured in her own name so she starts building up no claims.

Thanks for the replies so far.

At the moment I am thinking to keep my current car insured until the expiry date (end of Oct), which would then give me 4 years NCB. I assume that insurers only honour full years completed (so for example if I cancelled insurance now and received a rebate I would get no NCB).

That would mean bringing my Dad's car back up to Leeds where I live and leaving it on my drive until the end of October, when I could then insure only my Dad's car and leave my own car parked on the drive with a SORN.

The area I'm not clear on is insuring my Dad's car between when I pick it up and the end of October.

    Correct.

If you are going to sorn your own car, then swap over your car for your dad's on your policy.
